No HDMI audio with an older Denon AVR
https://support.denon.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/231/~/no-hdmi-audio-with-an-older-denon-avr
Older Denon AVRs such as the 1508, 1708, 588, 688, 589, 689, 1609, and 1709 were simply HDMI switchers and did not include an HDMI repeater to process the HDMI input audio. If you're using HDMI with these models you would have to hook up an alternative connection such as optical, digital coaxial, or RCA based analog in order to process audio from the AVR.

There is only one problem now...there is basically no sound coming out of the speakers. I say basically because if I turn the master volume all the way up, static and faint voices from the TV come out of the speakers.

These receivers are Video Switchers only and you will only receive audio through your television speakers via an HDMI connection. You can resolve this issue by connecting an additional audio cable to the receiver. If you connect a digital coaxial cable or an optical cable you will suffer no decrease in audio quality.
