PCM=Pulse Code Modulation (outputs in 2 channel stereo) I'm sure someone will be able to give you a far more technical answer but the quick answer is, unless you set your DVD's audio output to RAW (Bitstream) you will not be able to output 5.1 via digital co-ax/optical cable to an AV Amp/Receiver for surround sound (5.1/DTS). In PCM, the volume is lower but sounds much cleaner and uses dolby pro logic. The sub isn't as loud as I'd like it to be though. I guess I answered my own question, lol. If you are passing DTV through optical to your receiver, DTV signal usually carries Dolby Digital/DTS and your TV will send that directly through optical so you will get 5.1 discrete channels from DTV unless the content is only 2 channel, then it will pass it as RAW/PCM afaik.

PCM – outputs the stereo channels in stereo and the 5.1 channels in stereo Dolby Digital – outputs the stereo channels in some kind of fake surround sound and the 5.1 channels in 5.1 RAW – seems to do the same thing as the Dolby Digital setting. I would like the stereo channels to output in stereo and the 5.1 channels to output in 5.1.

PCM is the originally recorded digital audio (pulse coded modulation) - all A/V audio is PCM to start with, and all A/V audio will end up as PCM before hitting the DAC. Dolby Digital is lossily compressed PCM. It enables more audio to be stored in the same space and more audio to be transmitted across the same bandwidth. However, as said, DD is lossy.
