So I installed the ATI HDMI audio driver. This allowed the HDMI audio to work perfectly, but my Realtek onboard audio device was now disabled. I found that my default sound device had changed from the Realtek onboard to the ATI HDMI Driver. By manually switching the sound device I can choose between HDMI audio or Realtek/PC audio.

If win7, try to check sound in Control Panel. If XP you're in trouble. I've tried but couldn't get proper HDMI sound with 5450 under XP. It's always messing with chanells and resamples *everything* to 192kHz, so bitstreaming DD/DTS just not possible. It's better to use S/PDIF (toslink or coaxial) connection under XP.
