2015-04-03 9:33 pm. #1. I just picked up a pair of MTM speakers and will be making stands for them once I figure out the optimal height. Planning to get a small piece of 3/4" plywood to make the bases (~10" x 12") and the speaker mounts (~6" x 7") with either 2 or 4 columns between them. The idea is to make them look like these 2-column or 4 ...

Most speaker stands have a top plate design that will close in the bottom of the speaker. Some higher end stands like the Epos st12i have an open frame top. What, if any, are the advantages in having the standard top plate design. in my opinion it is like putting a speaker on a shelf or stuffing it in to a corner.

Ok, after pricing quality speaker stands, I have decided to build my own. I am thinking of using 3/4" think Oak plywood left over from building my entertainment center for the base and platform. This will be good since it will match my decor and please the wife . For the "posts" that run between the base and speaker platform, I have two options.

Take a small piece of MDF left over after building the stands. Drill a hole in the center and press a 1" roofing nail through (roofing nails are the ones with thin, flat heads). Turn it over and bolt it, via the corners, to the bottom of your speaker (or in this case, stand). Instant spike for virtually zero money. Works like a charm.

Not as expensive as any of those above at a bit under $32 million per cubic foot. Mercury is further down the list at 13.5 g/cm^3 but it's well under $0.01 per gram compared to gold at $57 per gram and, as long as you seal things up real carefully you can just pour it in! Winner! •••. More options. Share.

DIY speaker stands. Totally worth the time, effort and dollars to make these. They really make a big difference and finally make listening to that system worth it. I do have my desktop rig on the other side of this room too. What speakers are those ? I’m intrigued.

Only a couple things to remember with stands, speaker couples to stand and stand couples to floor. The goal is to prevent any movement other than the speaker drivers. Resonance can be overcome with mass-loading (lead shot or sand). The best set I have are hollow aluminum extrusions with steel top & bottom plates. Inside is 50 lbs. of lead shot.
