The left channel has somewhat distorted sound (Wario sounds like an evil maniac with a really deep voice). Right channel is normal, except the sound is popping/crackling. I was using DSound, which was default. I tried switching to XAudio2. So far i think sounds better, i haven't noticed any distorted sound effects during the cutscenes.

Dsound was getting old, and was removed. As Kurausukun said, if Xaudio2 is crashing, its' probably a system error on your end. You should check Windows update for any recommended or optional updates. Also, if you're on Windows 8, there is a known issue with Xaudio2 and certain sound cards. To fix that, either update to windows 8.1 or use OpenAL

In order to prevent noise and crackling audio, I've read that I need to either use the LLE DSP or switch to Xaudio2 with HLE DSP. Problem is, Xaudio2 crashes Dolphin when enabled. As for the differences you hear, such as when switching between DSound and XAudio2, you can probably chalk it up to how the newer API handles certain audio functions versus the old API. XAudio2 might be doing something that takes longer or maybe Dolphin uses it in a less efficient way than DSound.
