Airplay & downsampling - Apple Community

I think this is done by Itunes. Because the Airport Express architecture can only handle 44.1/16, this is logical and no issue. Itunes itself however is perfectly able to play 96/24 music without downsampling: through the digital output of the Imac, Itunes outputs 96/24 music. So the downsampling only occurs when streaming my music via Airtunes.

Without Tidal Masters’ MQA-powered audio origami, AudioQuest’s DragonFly series of dongle DACs are capped at 96kHz. They downsample 24bit/192kHz to 24bit/96kHz to instead give priority to pocketability and sufficiently low power draw not to need slipstreamed power when paired with a smartphone or tablet.
Q. What’s the best way to downsample? - Sound on Sound

I have no problem understanding dithering 24-bit audio to 16-bit, but am less clear about downsampling. Before attempting to master (once the mix is done and in stereo format) I take the file and downsample from 96kHz to 44.1kHz, but there is a definitely noticeable degrading of the high end when I’ve done this.
