I started to think about this myself when my R8B hit the twenty year mark. Some of the original R8's are closer to thirty now. I've come to the conclusion that it's probably worth replacing the e-caps in the power supply and perhaps certain other locations such as the audio amp circuits but I don't think replacing all the e-caps in the receiver can be justifed.

Hi, There are two people now on here with the same fault with their Drake R8, which it seems is more than a coincidence. Maybe this will be a common fault like the audio capacitors that will show up on more radios as they age. Maybe it could be more dried out or leaky electrolytics, as many now are getting way past their service life.

The R8E's coverage starts at 150khz as opposed to 100khz on the american R8 version. When comparing the R8(E) to the later R8A the latter was said to have a slight edge DX-wise but only marginally so. However, the audio was said to be better on the R8(E) than either the R8A or R8B.
