Perian is supposed to have DTS support but Mac OS core audio routines normally output audio as stereo unless you have hardware or are using a media app that can pass the source audio directly to a DTS decoder. I normally create a "universal" file with one video track, an AAC Pro Logic stereo audio mixed-down track and an AC3 DD5.1 audio track.

I am able to play DTS WAV files in iTunes, but DVDs with DTS audio have no sound when opened in the DVD Player. I have read that the DVD Player has DTS support, but Quicktime does not. I also thought that Quicktime was a component of iTunes. I'm very confused. My eyes are bleeding from all the tech documents I've read on the web.

FWIW, you can play DTS in QT for Mac if you have Perian installed. I'm playing a QT movie with DTS audio right now, as it happens. I was trying to help out a colleague who only had access to a Windows machine, but since there appears to be no Windows equivalent to Perian and no native Windows apps that will play QTs with DTS audio *and* replicate the export …

You could leave DTS as an audio track, and as long as you had an AAC track to go with it, it was fine - it would play in iTunes, Quick Look, and on AppleTV. Now they are all not working, unless you go in and delete the DTS track.

Furthermore, due to issues related to how multi-channel audio is handled, the decoder is unaware of the order QuickTime expects (rdar:6921431).
