It is a problem if you're downmixing a surround sound audio track to stereo (or mono). Obviously, if the dvd has it, it's better to listen to the dedicated stereo tracks since presumably the mix will be more suited for systems without surround sound.

The reason dvd volumes are low is because AC3 audio is mastered at a low volume. (I don't really know the technicalities of it.) When you switch to 2-channel, you're switching to a totally different audio track. I get the same low volume with the dvds I rip to xvids with AC3 audio.

I noticed that when i rip a DVD & burn it (to DVD-R), the audio volume is low compared to the original, about half the volume of the original.
