Your DVD player will downmix a 5.1 AC3 track to a stereo track on the fly to output through the phono jacks. You will only ever get stereo or pro-logic out of these. If your player can't decode DTS and output it as 6 seperate channels (one for each speaker) then you need an amp with a digital (optical or coax) connection and a DTS encoder.

By unchecking all audio except AC3 5.1-ch English we just increased it from 55.7% to 76.5%. Click Set Start/End Frames and will edit out the credits for even better video quality. Drag right slider bar to the start of the credits to set the End Frame. Due to editing out the credits we now have 83% which is excellent video quality.

My friend says there is a huge difference between DTS and 5.1 sound. I think you mean AC3. 5.1 is the channel arrangement, not the encoding method. And, yes, to comply with specs an NTSC DVD must contain either AC3 or LPCM. DTS, due to licensing costs, and being late to the table with final specs, is not supported by all NTSC players.
