The confusion is/was the DVP5982 supports DTS through HDMI or Coax. But not both HDMI and Coax at the same time. These may have changed with the firmwares. First, Digital Audio Ouput needs set set to All for DTS. Setup - System Setup - Audio Setup - Digital Audio Setup - Digital Audio Ouput - All When Coax is used, HDMI audio must be turned off.

This prevented me from using an HDMI cable until a firmware update was released to allow the continuous audio output through the optical connector.
