I tried the audiofire 8 some years ago and wasn't blown away. It was better then the old presonus fp10 but not as good as a mr816. Now I use a ff800 and I am very happy. It's perfect and I hear the quality. Mr816 had better preamps but the drivers were bad and the interface sucked (my opinion) Just my 2 cents

the steinberg is a class act, i never really liked the echo audiofire 12 sound so i sold it, the D/A conversion was good but the A/d was a different story very mid to high frequency range conversion it lacks bottom and depth kinda flat sounding compared to the mr816,x and at 599 for 100 dollars more you get digital outs.

Now I read most of that thread and truth be told, you could have run a vast number of interfaces against the Orpheus and got the same results, with that type of test. In general the A/D and D/A converters in the consumer market are really decent. Heck, Echo's Audiofire 8/12 have the same as the Apogee lineup if I remember corrctly.
