I have a Echo Layla 3G (same spec of Echo AudioFire 8) and I recently compared my Echo with my new Apogee Duet. I compared pre mics of Layla 3G with pre mics of Duet: the sound is similar, Duet is a little more clear. The output at -10 db sound better with Duet than with Layla (similar sound but more volume).

2.My other option was to get an Apogee One and the M179 and maybe a cheap preamp such as the Golden Age Pre 73 or the EH 12ay7. How big a difference in preamps and conversion between the One and the Duet? I have heard people record some great things with this thing. 3.The final option would be the Echo Audiofire 8 and the CAD M179.
