I agree with indaco's post. Look at the triode-wired curves for the EL34: The EL34 Tube. (first graph, top graph is triode-wired). With a 2.5k primary, you need to use enough cathode current (plate/screen combined current) to stay in the straight slope portions of the triode wired combo plate/screen curves.

On the other hand, 6CA7 is a 6L6GC-type beam tetrode with EL34 characteristics. You can plop a set of 6CA7 tubes into an EL34 amp and expect good results. That's because 6CA7 was designed to be a direct replacement for EL34. --Edit to add: One exception I found is the Russian 63PS-E tube (sold by Sovtek as a 5881, but it's not that at all).

The El34 PP output is fixed bias, at 40ma per tube (I have the original Dynaco ST70 power transformer and it gets very hot, so the bias on the EL34 is quite low). I also remove the feedback and wired the El34 in triode. I did this experiment while waiting for a replacement driver board for my Dynaco ST70.

Try removing the 2k Ohm negative feedback resistor; and disconnect the EL34 screen from the UL transformer tap, and re-connect the EL34 screen to a 100 Ohm resistor, and the other end of that resistor to the EL34 plate. That will be lots less power out, but will change the character of the sound. Easy to try, and only cost is a 100 Ohm resistor.

Hey guys, I bought the boyuu a9 three years ago. I struggled alot, because I hadn't any clue how the amplifier works. Now I wouldn't say, that I know anything more than before. :D When I turned the amplifier on a humming sound gets louder. When I use the pontiometer to control the volume I can...
