If you delete or rename an audio file, any sampler instrument that makes use of this file will not be able to find it, so take care when performing these operations on audio files. You are free to move audio files to another location on your system, however. The EXS24 mkII can find moved files when sampler instruments are loaded.

I think that Logic X uses the MacOS Spotlight database to find samples referenced by EXS Instruments - this is why it never complains. If the drive has been fully indexed by Spotlight, things just load, and the only time Logic X throws a dialog is if multiple copies of a sample have been found - in that case you are presented with the "which one do you want" file …
