I am on windows 8 and my sound card is an Asus Xonar Dg.

I have this problem too.. When i racing alone, for example time trial mode.. is everything ok. But in racing weekend i get after while (5-6 minutes) huge performance problem.. sound becomes crappy and crackling, game is lagging.. this is happening for 2-3 minutes and then everything is back to normal..

Make sure that both (or more) correspond to each other: audio drivers/in-game/Windows. Make sure the setups in each of those areas match the setup you are actually using. The game might be outputting 5.1 and you're Windows/Audio driver settings might be set up for Stereo and hence you're not getting the center channel (engineer/manager voices).
