My newly upgraded Fedora 8 has no sound too. I am using Dell Optiplex desktop, with Intel soundcard. Only the "Soundcard Detection" tool in System->Administration can play a test sound. Other softs like vlc, rythmbox, or skype (as someone reported working) failed.
