The ideal, for the best quality output, is don't use ffdshow Normalization. A correct Normalization need 2 pass, first found the max peak value, after amplify all the audio with the same value. A normalization on the fly can have problems when there are abrupt changes between low and high volumes.

Select Audio. Check the "Normalize volume to:" box and set the value to 1.6 ... Once it's "installed" in the ffdshow audio decoder (there's a Winamp2 filter in ffdshow) you can then configure the compressor. I tried lots of settings, and eventually settled on these. They turn the volume up and down so fast I can't tell it's happening.

In practice they are usually used to “flatten out” the sound though. Regain volume on the other hand, does not require pre-calculated values, and can be used with all audio formats supported by ffdshow. It does not change the volume as aggressively as Decoder DRC, and retains more of the original dynamic range.
