To fix it, I just went into Control Panel > Sounds & Audio Devices > Audio tab > Sound Recording Volume button > Options > Properties > Recording, clicked the Select box for Stereo Mix and dropped the slider down to the second lowest notch (same as Rockmaster's advice above). It now records and plays back at the correct level with no distortion.

just needed to go to volume recording options, select realtek HDA primary input ( has to be the same one in FRAPS ) and tag everything that's there. I have a Toshiba laptop with a Realtek sound card. The operating system is Windows XP SP3 Professional. I've been trying to record Fraps videos while commenting via the laptop's built-in microphone; as far as I know, the best way to do it is to enable microphone playback on the Volume Control panel and record from Stereo Mix.
