Stevens & Billington Limited Audio transformers TX-102 Thanks to all for advice and suggestions, hopefully you can see the funny side of it. The waveform in the excerpt is identical.. and my apologies to Mr Pimm for any suggestion that his CCS was the issue here.
Some Notes on Gary Pimm’s Phono Preamp

Pimm sez he has set the transformers for a 4:1 step down ratio. That means 4 volts min at the plate of the 6GK5, working into 4K. The total plate current is set at 2.5 mA, so the signal at that point can go from zero to 5 mA, max. Into 4 K that translates to zero to 20 volts, or 7 volts rms. Looks like it can make that requirement OK. But
The Karna Amplifier

The new Karna amplifiers, designed by Lynn Olson and built by Gary Pimm. Bent Audio/Noh transformer volume control, and the original Ariel speakers. Many years ago when I was designing the Amity, Takuji Yamamoto of the Direct Heating Society of Japan urged me to try direct-heated drivers for the 300B tubes.

The workaround to the high gain of the stage has been cleverly addressed by Gary Pimm. Here is just a brief summary of how to implement it: The circuit can be explained easily. The pentode (U1) is loaded with the gyrator (g1). The pentode screen has a stable voltage (vs) which is provided by the voltage regulator (U2) and the CCS formed by M1+R2.

I'm looking at using a CCS to replace the 6SN7 plate resistor in my 5Y3/6SN7/2A3 amps. I've seen offerings from Gary Pimm (IXYS 10M45 chip), K&K Audio (Supertex DN2540N5 chip), and the Bottlhead C4S circuit.

Posted by mark_titano on December 23, 2004 at 06:07:22. Hi, I like to try Gary Pimm's BBCCS but I have some troubles to find the IRF820. I've found some IRF830, the most notable difference I find in the datasheet are the input and output capacitance.
