Universal has recently announced that "Gaucho" will soon be released on SACD. Warner has already released Donald Fagen”s “The Nightfly” on DVD-Audio this past December. Elliot Scheiner mixed both albums originally and I mastered both originally. It is great to have the original team together again for the SACD and DVD-Audio versions.

I have both versions. They both sound very good in surround. (I haven't listened to the stereo tracks.) You really can't go wrong with either. Still, they don't sound exactly alike. I haven't played them in a while. So, going by memory I believe the SACD is a tad warmer while the DVD Audio leans to the cool side, but this difference isn't huge.

The DTS-CD is not as good of a mix as the DVD-A, plus you may listen in stereo if you wish. The price is right, I saw it at Tower Records.com for $15.99. I tried the Pandora's box, and after a song or two by Steely Dan, they wouldn't play any more, giving me stuff by other groups all the time, so I found Rhapsody.

I feel the issue would at least have to be decided using a multi format player with the same info playing both formats, SACD and BR discs. Good luck finding identical content on both BR and SACD formats. Playing at their highest resolutions and of course thru the same audio gear. An appraisal like this is not going to yield a definitive outcome.

To those who don't know, Scheiner has worked as an engineer in many of Steely Dan's albums, including the original version of "Gaucho" (1980). He later did a 5.1 mix of the album for DTS Entertainment and, more recently, was asked to do this mix for SACD (now also on DVD-Audio).
