Yes, as you can see above the nvidia audio device is handled by the intel driver. Everything appeared to work, but there was no sound. However, I just updraded my kernel (2.6.35-rc1-00350-ged8319e) and upgraded alsa-lib and alsa tools (1.0.23) and now I get audio over hdmi on the ion2. aplay works.

I the the OP has to figure out if the audio is supposed to come out through the nvidia interface or the intel device. if it's the intel device there has to be some physical connection (as you say) between the intel device and the hdmi connector.
