I have the gnome sounds working and I didn't change anything to get them to work. They work pretty much out of the box for me. However, if I remember correctly, I did have problems with gnome sounds when I used to use Ubuntu, but that was without Pulseaudio obviously. Anyway, with Pulseaudio and Debian I didn't do much to get the sounds running.
