I use a pair of -14dB Goldenjacks attenuators between my tube preamp and solid state power amp. They are excellent. There is zero effect on my system sound, except that the noise floor is a lot lower and my volume control is much easier to use.

A bit of shot in the dark, but I think the 20 db attenuator is probably your better choice in either case. With this if you are using the rear inputs (input 3 and 4) it should take around 2.5 volts for peak input and the front would take more than 3.8 volts. That should likely work with your phono pre.
