I've ran an HDMI 1.3 cable from my PC with an ATI Radeon HD 4870 (OEM DVI to HDMI adapter) through my Sony STR-DG720 into my Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 1080. I have a DFI LanParty X58-T3H6 motherboard and a VisionTek Radeon HD 4870 Video card with HD audio. I have an HDMI cable going from the HDMI output on the HD4870 to my Sony AV receiver and all I get is Stereo Audio. When I go into control panel, sounds and audio devices, I can only see this on board sound card. There is no other option here. Have a look at this screenshot, the ATI HD AUDIO option does not show. And just to recap on above, when I try to install the Realtek HDMI driver, it says "No driver was supported in this package"
