Why do you want it to work in HD audio mode? The setting is used to switch between the two common standards for the pin configuration used by you case's front panel connector. They are not backwards compatible. If it works in AC97 mode, that must be the correct setting. The AC 97 mode is for old sound panels which have lower quality.

But make sure you have all of the settings in the playback devices right and if that doesn't work try the AC97 header. A quick google search led me to find your motherboard manual.
