I've been a user of iChat AV for several years, and in the past 6-8 months it's stopped working as well as it used to. I routinely used it to connect from California to Florida and Indiana, and now I get about one minute or less of decent audio and video in a session before one or both ends starte breaking up and freezing.

Opening up Garageband doesn't work. Muting and unmuting doesn't work. All my other sounds seem to work fine. The sound when you turn the volume up and down works. The Toast notification works. Adium sounds work. iTunes works. Games work. Web browser sounds and audio work. But like you said, iChat, Mail, and system sounds all gone.
