Fortunately, I do get sound about half the time. Once sound stops working, the standard "Volume Mixer" in the system tray freezes us, and I tend to start having lots of problems with Skype, iTunes and Windows Virtual PC. Usually on a reboot, sound will come back. But not always. Just now, I had sound working for a while, but it's no longer working.

Intel D975XBX I have the same board as you peter and also am running into the exact same problem. After extensive debugging and many different driver installs (all resulting in that "chirping" sound I ended up throwing in an old SB audigy card.
