Skype only seems to offer up mono, and it wasn't until I had Pulseaudio in place that I would get said mono stream from both sides. That is with my standard, old style, two plug headset. I have still not perfected the Bluetooth and Skype thing, as the new Bluetooth headset I bought simply gave up the struggle and my old one is rather uncomfortable.

Skype worked flawlessly on Intrepid but barfed (actually choked on 200% CPU – 2xcores, and 30 seconds speech latency) under Jaunty (BETA). This -PulseAudio/+esound work-around has Skype sound under Jaunty working again for me (and I suspect even sounds a lot cleaner). 10-15% max CPU.
