Is USB 2.0 Fast Enough For Audio Recording? - Audiodome

If the audio device does not have an internal connection, then no speed increase will occur. As a result, you may need an external drive or card in order to make USB 2.0 fast enough for audio recording. Bear in mind that you may also need additional drives or cards if your purpose is to record onto more than one audio device.
Is your audio interface fast enough? - Adventures In Audio

As exciting as it might seem, USB 3.0 might just not be the future of audio interfaces. Of course it is faster than USB 2.0, but only in the sense that it can carry more data traffic and therefore more channels. It doesn't get the data there any quicker so there is no advantage in latency over USB 2.0.
USB, Firewire & Thunderbolt: Which Is Best For Audio?

At the theoretical maximum USB 2 bandwidth, you’d be able to record just over 40 tracks of 24-bit, 96kHz audio, while halving the sample rate to 48kHz would give you 80 tracks.

Is a USB 3 drive fast enough for audio streaming. Search ... The USB 3 protocol is more than enough to handle it, however the speed of the drive itself that may be a limiting factor. More often than not, the speed of the drive in the enclosure is not disclosed. The most fail safe route is to buy a usb 3 enclosure, and get a desktop or laptop ...
USB In Audio: Explained - Audient

To prove this, we can actually do the maths to work out how much of the USB bandwidth is required by audio data. If we take the worse case scenario of an iD44 with 44 channels of I/O, working at 96kHz and using bit depth of 24 bits. This is using USB2.0 with a bandwidth of 480Mbps or 480,000,000 bits per second.

The original USB 3.0 speed reaches 5.0Gbps (640MB/s), and its maximum output current is 5V/900mA. However, USB 3.0 has dual channel mode (USB 3.1 Gen1x2), which can make the speed reach 10Gbps (5Gbps per channel). The limitation is that the dual channel mode needs to use USB Type-C interface.

A: You can use USB, but for audio (or any realtime streaming) it is less efficient than FireWire, and it uses extra CPU, which FireWire doesn't. So if you're planning on, say, recording 8 stereo tracks at once, USB may well fail. For only 1 or 2 tracks simultaneously, it'll do.

The RME Fireface UC is even USB 3.0 compatible, so if your computer has USB 3.0, it'll be much faster than even FW800. But really, you'll be OK with USB 2.0. If you're not willing to spend that much, consider M-Audio's Fast Track Ultra or Ultra 8R, which are still the USB speed champs, right behind RME. ShareReplyQuote 6th March 2011 | Show parent

Scott, I haven't used USB3 for stream recording, but I have used it for large amounts of data copy (100Gb). It's very fast, and certainly much faster that UBS2. Early IDE had a transfer rate of up to 133Mb/s and that was successfully used for audio live recording. USB3 can supposedly do up to 625Mb/s.
