That keeps the size of the MP3 fairly small, but reduces the chance you'll hear artifacts. LAME is a free MP3 encoder available online. It has a good variable bitrate (VBR) encoder. The V0 setting is LAME's highest setting -- it will give you a finished file roughly the size of a straight 256kb MP3, but at a quality close to a straight 320kb file.
