Some guides suggest disabling all of them and installing LAV Audio Decoder separately. K-Lite Mega Codec Pack used ffdshow for an audio filter/decoder. I used it to get either Stereo sound over HDMI or 5.1 Dolby Digital Live sound over SPDIF with my Creative X-Fi Titanium sound card. It worked well with AC3 5.1 content.

I did some tests with a 5.1 source upmixing it to 7.1 with Lav. Lav just moves the Back L/R channels to Side L/R. Disabled some of the options on LAV audio font panel, the ones related to surround sound, did not change anything. Also tried the options on the Mixing panel, still same. FFaudio does not move them at all.

Dolby and DTS are both special "languages" of digital audio coding. At some point in the process of playing the file you need to decode them to PCM (sometimes used interchangeably with LPCM).
