LAV audio with 7.1 mixer the just moves the Back L/R channels to Side L/R. Disabled some of the options on LAV audio font panel, the ones related to surround sound, did not change anything. Also tried the options on the Mixing panel, still same. FFdshow leaves the 2 extra channels empty.

Open up MPC HC and under View -> Options go to Internal Filters and ensure that any Source Filters you want LAV used for are unchecked (so for my test I made sure Matroska and MPEG PS/TS/PVA were unchecked) Next up go to Options -> External Filters and add “LAV Splitter”, “LAV Splitter Source”, and “LAV Audio Decoder”, setting them as Prefer.

In theory, both Media Portal Audio Renderer and LAV Audio have the option to upmix stereo to 5.1, as does ffdshow if you prefer that. In practice I have never tried it as I also use my amp to apply a Neo 6 cinema pro-logic setting to all stereo video / tv sources.

On the left click "Mixer". On the right: Check "Mixer". Set the "Output speaker configuration" as desired. "3/0/2 - 5 Channels" and checking "LFE" will give you DD5.1. "3/2/1 - 6 Channels" with LFE is DD6.1 EX "3/2/2 - 7 Channels" with LFE is DD7.1 EX You get the idea. You can go lower, or have no LFE as desired.
