It seems to have something to do with the mute button on the keyboard itself. Until Lenovo will address that issue, which it probably will not because of the age of the T400, the sound will not work from the speakers. Anyway, bluetooth works, and I have a fine speaker that works. Thanks for the advice.

After a few reboots the random freezes seemed to stop altogether (installed CS suite and a load of other software with no problems) but in the end I decided to revert back to Windows 7. I tried a few different drivers with no luck and without the correct display drivers Windows 10 did not look good on the T400 and sound was terrible.
