Audio or linear taper pots? What’s the difference ...

A LINEAR taper pot increases the signal in a linear fashion. (“1” on your control is equal to 10%, “4” is equal to 40% and so forth) This works very different from an audio taper volume pot. For those looking for a smooth, …
Potentiometers: Audio vs. Linear Tapers
https://www.jameco.com/Jameco/workshop/circuitnotes/Potentiometers-audio-taper-vs-linear.html
In a linear taper the relative position is equal to the resistance ratio. For example, rotating the potentiometer to 50% will cause the pot to function at 50% of the maximum resistance. Linear tapers can be good for adjusting lighting through light dimmers or for motion control. Non-linear tapers are often referred to as a logarithmic or audio ...

The difference between audio & taper is if you want to use a pot that is linear taper it is to provide an adjustment for a device or a feed to a device. An audio taper is a volume control or bass or treble control etc.

I'm the opposite, I like Linear for the volume & audio taper for tone. I do have Linear tone controls on my SG & can live with (too lazy to change them out). I like Linear volume controls (with humbuckers) so the roll off isn't all crowded in the 7-10 range, giving finer control over how hard I'm hitting the front of the amp.

Tone pots should always be log/audio taper. I use linear taper vol pots because I want a fine control going down from 10. I nearly always have the vol rolled back to 6-8, I set up the amp with it at 5. This may sound like a long way but it is not on a linear pot. On a linear pot the 50% position is 5. On a log pot the 50% position is near 8.

The audio taper on the volume will clean up an overdriven tone as you turn it down to 7-6-5 or so. I think the quality of the taper is the key. The stock CTS audio taper that Gibson uses doesn't really interact until the volume is on 7- 8 or so. In theory an audio pot is at 50% with the volume on "7" where a linear is at 70% when on "7".

My Gibson had 300K linear volumes and 500K audio tones. Putting in typical 10% audio taper 500K volumes gave it the sweep (and tone) I prefer. Linear volumes are great if you don't play with distortion and require a volume knob to clean up your tone. Primary - Products. $9.

Re: Audio Taper vs. Linear Taper (whats what) and Cap Questions... I wish there was a taper between audio and linear. If there is, please tell me! I use my volume knob to go from mid-gain dirty to clean. With linear taper I find the change between 10 and 3 to be barely noticable - all the "cleaning up" happens between 3 and 0.
Audio or Linear Pots? — Six String Supplies
https://sixstringsupplies.co.uk/pages/audio-or-linear-pots
Guitar pots generally fall into two taper categories – audio and linear. This describes the point of resistance as the pot is turned. For example, a linear pot has a uniform taper – when the pot is turned to its halfway point of the cycle (50%), it will reach …

500 k linear taper pot and 500k audio taper pot have the same effect only when both are either on 10 or on 0. Any other setting between 0 and 10 is different for these 2 pots. Further, tone pot is just a simple variable resistor. That is why …
