After hours of trying this and that we stumbled upon the solution to the blank waterfall! Going to Configuration > Audio > Device. We are told to use PulseAudio if we are running Linux which works fine. However, with Ubuntu and Signalink we discovered that it is necessary to use PortAudio! I have no idea why it works that way, but it does.
