ZUNE does not support WMA lossless, so this article is a bit misleading. Media that is WMA lossless on a PC will remain at that quality, as soon as you load to a phone it converts them to the best setting under Settings -> Phone -> Conversion Settings. i.e 320 kbps. WMA comes in three flavors and the Zunes support them all - WMA, WMA Professional (both lossy) and WMA Lossless. WMA, of the three, has the best general support - some other legacy devices support it like Sansa's, Gigabeats etc. And WMA Lossless, although very little support outside of Zunes, does in fact work if you have to have lossless.

I've confirmed it myself, it's indeed zune HD is playing lossless music files but at slightly lower bitrate as Zune client converts them to Zune HD as the picture shown below. My whole music library I made for Zune takes 26.4 GB while, it takes 22.53GB on Zune. 4.86Gb of 26.4 GB music library is lossy audio files.

I believe you're stuck with WMA lossless for the Zune. You could look at players that support Rockbox which will allow you to use most formats, including FLAC.
