I´m working with the MPK 49 at home and with the axiom in the studio, so i can give you a few informations about my experience with both of them. First of all which DAW do you want to control with it? The Axiom has some nice presets for Pro Tools, so you can easily control the transport section and the Mix faders.

Toddskins. I just found that Amazon.com, of all places, has the Akai MPK 49 for $30 less than Sweetwater ($400) at $370. Musician's Friend wants $420. 2nd, here is the review of the Akai MPK 49 from Keyboard Magazine (reviewed this past May, 2008), which had nothing but good things to say about it.

The MPK49 feels very solid. I incidentally compared them again at my local music store yesterday, and felt that the keyboard of the MPK was much closer to a real piano than the one of the Axiom. The faders of the Axiom Pro also felt very cheap, but the pads were nice. You should really try them for yourself if you have the opportunity.
