To do this right you need to connect the mono line out of the Roland to the guitar input on the Fast Track and then set the Fast Track input switch to "Line". You may still need to play with the volume on the Roland a bit to get the record levels just right. To do stereo you will need two cables, one 1/4" to 1/4" mono and one 1/4" to XLR mono.

Re: M Audio fast track pro problem Could possibly be a bad capacitor or something, unless it is something obvious it will probably be hard to diagnose just looking at the board (no publicly available circuit diagrams). It would probably cost more to repair then to replace it with something better/newer if you can't do the repair yourself.
