I use an M-Audio Profire 610 as an external sound card for my Mac (specs in my sig). The instruction manual for the 610 says to avoid hot-plugging at all costs to avoid causing damage to the sound card and/or my Mac. I'm using a Firewire to Thunderbolt cable, and Mac sources say that hot-plugging with Thunderbolt is safe.

I have an M-Audio Firewire Audiophile and have been saying the exact same thing for nearly a year now. I only use the digital out, but there is a very obvious lack of dynamics and clarity. I have been quite disappointed by this thing because I essentially plunked down $300 for something that apparently can't even send a good digital out.

The Saffire Pro 26 i/o shuts down into protection mode causing a nasty spike out of the monitors if they're on and my M-Audio Firewire goes absolutely spastic if anything suddenly appears on the same bus...

I've always hot-plugged devices without a worry. I've always assumed that's what FireWire was designed to do. However, recently I purchased an M-Audio ProFire 610 - it's a multi-channel digital audio interface - and plastered all over its documentation (and the website) are warnings that you MUST turn the device off before plugging or unplugging.
