The M-Audio stuff is servicable although the drivers are a bit quirky, still, I doubt your original problems were completely related to the FW410. One thing most people don't do is follow M-Audio's instructions to the "T". I would clean out M-Audio FW410 drivers, remove all folders related to M-Audio.

Anyway, the M-Audio FW1814 (the big brother to the 410) has temperamental S/PDIF. It stops working correctly unless the device is the only thing on the FireWire bus. (Well, it sometimes works with up to one other device, but only if the M-Audio box is first in the chain.)
