M-Audio say their aim with Sputnik is to straddle the areas covered by tube classics such as the Neumann U47 and the AKG C12, which suggests that they're going for natural warmth combined with smooth highs. They go on to explain in their documentation that it isn't just the fact that tubes overload gracefully that makes tube gear sound good.

M-Audio's Sputnik delivers the smooth valve sound they intended, and at a reasonable price. Pros Surprisingly smooth, neutral-sounding. Copes with low frequencies well. Great value for money. Cons Not good for dull-on-top instruments. A bit heavy. M-Audio continues to go from strength to strength, and is still upping its game.

Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2013 I had this microphone since it came out . It broke (my fault) and my recording life hurts so bad without it. Don't let the fact that mine broke dissuade you. I left it on ALL the time. I NEVER turned it off and I dropped the power supply in a rather ugly fashion.

M-Audio have done their very best in fine tuning the diaphragm and controls and switches on this monster. The 200ft power cable is very efficient with absolutely no power loss or loss in signal strength. Come with its own power supply which is also another neat thing about this mic. Everything you can ever want is in its dedicated flight case.

the sputnik has a self noise of only 18 dba and for sensitivity a healthy 30 mv/pa, and this combination and the fact it has diaphragms only 3 microns thick that were gold-coated by evaporation and the way everything runs through a class a head amp with a 6025m pentode vacuum tube circuit (wired triode) nicely tricked-out means that it delivers …

I first used the M-Audio Sputnik tube condenser microphone a few months ago after hearing some good things about it. While I wasn't expecting too much from it since it isn't expensive and is made by a company that isn't exactly known for making microphones, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that this is a very good sounding microphone.

The Sputnik is flattering on vocals, especially male voices, but I've also had success with it on female vocals. It's adds some really nice tube warmth but still captures all the high end detail you need. It doesn't add much sibilance at all. To me almost seems to compress the source a little.

one of the best mics for the price If you're looking for a tube mic to "warm up" or "smooth out" an edgy sound source, don't get this mic. It should NOT be considered an effect. However, you do get fantastic rendering of true sound with little to no inherent harshness. Tonally, the Sputnik holds it's own with other like-priced mics.
