Go to Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup. Volumes on the speaker may be off. One of my channels was turned way down and was giving me a mono effect. Up the volume on the slider to even them out. You can also change the settings if they are off. I think the default is 44100.0 Hz and 2ch-16bit. Hope that helps.

the easiest cheapest way i found to do this is to head to radio shack and pick up a small adapter that fits to the end of an 1/8 inch jack (headphones, speakers, whatever). the male end accepts stereo from your source, the female end outputs mono.
