a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter -> connected the new MacBook to my telly - video and audio both fine; Connecting every cable/adapter to each of the 4 different ports on the Mac ; reset nvram; And all I've got is the same every time. Some additional info: It's a Macbook Pro 13" 2018 version. Using a Thunderbolt to Displayport cable, plugging in to a Dell monitor with speakers. In another location I use the same cable to plug in to Dell monitors with Displayport but without built in speakers in the monitors.

I have a Thunderbolt 3 docking station and my monitor is plugged in through DisplayPort. My speakers are plugged into the monitor using the 3.5mm jack. My retired 2017 MacBook Pro would play audio to the monitor. My newer M1 MacBook Pro will. A friends M1 MacBook Air will. But my 2019 16” Intel MacBook Pro won’t play audio through the monitor.
