a few things might work - i had the same problem. for a working fix - go to system preferences --> sound --> sound effects and choose 'use audioport for - input'. plug in headphones and your mac speakers should work. this will disable your mac's built in mic, so unless your headphones have a mic, you wont have audio input until you change this setting back.

Grab a Nice and Clean Sharp Toothpick, and find a LIttle dent on 7’oclock position. and push that little dent for a several times, At first it will blink a few times, and keep trying until the red light go off, It took about only 2 minute! also make sure you won’t damage any other port or parts, you have to push the toothpick very gently!

The red light is probably because its a Mini-TOSLINK port. There is a metal prong in the jack and sometimes it can be bent , causing the digital audio to be turned on when it shouldn't be. The problem is there is a switch in the jack that tells it if you have a mini headphone plug or an optical plug plugged into the headphone port .

first, plug in a USB device (iPod, hard drive, etc..) (I used an iPod) Next plug headphones into the headphone slot, then uplug them. This should turn off the optical light. Like i said this did work for me, I am making no promises but I had tried everything, and this did it. J.
