Repairing M-Audio Bx5a speaker | Electronics Forums

There is a manufacturing flaw in the BX-5A speakers that will guarantee this "blown filter cap" problem (and others flowing from it) will recur on every single one of them unless addressed. The root of the problem is the 25VDC voltage rating on the primary 6800uF filter caps. Those caps when good measure 23VDC across them, (on my pair anyway).

Smoking M-Audio bx5a - Capacitor blown? Hi - relatively new to electronic repairs .. is it apparent which elements here are damaged? I was listening to these (used/new looking) and one speaker was set to 230 instead of 115v. M-Audio’s new BX5a Deluxe employs Kevlar for low-frequency driver construction. The same material used in bullet-proof vests, Kevlar’s high resilience makes it ideal for use in speaker cones—although it is typically reserved for monitors with higher price tags than the BX5a Deluxe.

Don't get me wrong, they are good. But I prefer M-audio BX5a. Much more balanced sound out of M-audio. So the myth about being comparable to Aktimates? It's blown. Compared to Aktimates, A5s are sloppy at best. My friends in Sydney didn't think the difference was huge, but Aktimate was just better at everything (when compared directly).

One of my BX5a's had the same issue about a year ago and the culprit ended up being failed capacitors. You can usually spot them when you open the unit because they're bulging and often leaking dark colored goo. If you're not experienced and comfortable working inside electronics, you should take them to a shop for repair.
