Horn experts - Please help to determine optimal throat ...

This, however, correponds badly with the throat sizes optained if I use the formula from Melhuish.org horn website where the throat size for given driver can be calculated with the fomula: St= [2 x Pi x Fs x Qt x Vas]/c which lead to a throat size = 81 cm2 for the Beyma driver.

Each speaker base is a 14X14 piece of 3/4" mdf. I rounded the edges and applied a 1/2" roundover to the front and sides. The discoloration is a 50/50 mix of carpenters glue and water which I painted on to reduce the edges' inclination to adsorb the paint, which I will spray on tomorrow.

"The classic horn is exponential. The exponential equation dictates that cross section area doubles every X distance from the small end to the big end. The equations behind it assume the wave down the horn is flat, which really can't be true. The exponential equation really does not tell us anything about the shape of the horn itself."

Hi-Fi Audio Drivers (Speakers and Tweeters) These are some of the drivers that we have had the opportunity to try out over the years. The pages contain information about the drivers (transducers) including photographs, history and background information, driver specifications and links to DIY speaker enclosure designs.
hyperbolic horns - Speakerplans.com Forums
https://forum.speakerplans.com/hyperbolic-horns_topic16471.html
Ax = Area at x along the horn. At = Area of the throat. xo = the cut off parameter. T = the flare parameter. The T in this equation determines the family to which the horn belongs. If T = 0 the expression is that of a hyperbolic cosine. If T = 1 the horn is exponential and if T = infinity the horn is conical.

The switching noise is what tends to make horns sound "grating" or "harsh". That and the fact that many metal based horns ring like crazy. Plastic horns do the same thing, but at a different frequency range. Knowing that, one can easily damp or minimize the effect of the horn throat itself and cure much of the problem.

Most audiophiles forget that for many decades, Altec horn loaded speakers were the industry standard for recording studios. You will have to listen to some horn speakers to see if they are to your liking. Both the best sound (Shindo Latour) I've every heard and the worst (Loth-X rear loaded horn) were from horn speakers.
