I managed to transcode my mkv/h.264/dts video to avi/xvid/dts using mencoder without reencoding audio (just copying the audio stream) and without these strange a/v out of sync problems. Here my understanding, what caused the problems. Somebody correct me if I got it wrong... The original video was encoded with the standard 23.976 fps.

I'm using mencoder to convert a DVD to a matroska file with H.264 video and Vorbis audio. But when I play the file, the aspect ratio is 2.43:1, when it should be 16:9. mkvmerge tells me it extracted the aspect ratio from the AVC video data as 2.43:1. "'video.x264' track 0: Extracted the aspect ratio information from the

QuickTime 7 supports H.264 video and AAC audio, but it does not support them muxed in the AVI container format. However, you can use MEncoder to encode the video and audio, and then use an external program such as mp4creator (part of the MPEG4IP suite) to remux the video and audio tracks into an MP4 container.. QuickTime 's support for H.264 is limited, so you will need …

Re: H.264 Pro Recorder audio out of sync. I've learned the hard way that the H.264 Pro Recorder (like most Blackmagic video capture hardware) requires a rock-solid video sync in order to capture and convert an incoming signal reliably. I had bad experiences with this device until I routed all off-tape outputs through a broadcast grade TBC (Time ...
h.264 - Can .h264 container contain audio tracks? - Stack ...
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/1884101/can-h264-container-contain-audio-tracks
A container for video encoded with H.264 - such as an MKV or MP4 - can absolutely contain audio. That's how you can watch an H.264 video that has sound as well. On the other hand, it sounds like you could be confused about what H.264 actually is. H.264/MPEG-4 AVC is a standard for video compression, which has nothing to do with audio at all.
