I see, I've only done a few direct-swaps between amplifiers but it seems to me that bipolar-based amps are smoother. For example, I had the Sherwood S-6040 (MOSFET) and a Yamaha M-50, they have similar power ratings but the M-50 has a smoother higher end. The Sherwood is dual-mono whereas the Yamaha is not.
MOSFET's vs Bipolar's - High-End Audio Discussion Forum

I own mosfet amps (B&K)and bipolar amps (Acurus). Both have their strengths and are both very enjoyable to me. Mosfets tend to be a bit warmer with an emphesis on the midrange while bipolars are usually punchier down low and a bit brighter up high. (these are my experiences) Some may say that bipolar designs handle low impedences better but with my …

For vertical type mosfets there is no such thing as true complementary. Bipolars have an advantage here in keeping good symmetry without over complicating the circuit design and layout. It is my opinion that the 'complementary' operation of the mosfet output stage is achieved in the driving stage.

Analytical is another word many use to describe Bp s. Yes that goes along with getting the last bit of detail. Mosfet s while still producing a great amount of detail are a little more rounded in their sound/ less analytical warmer sounding. Mosfet will also reveal weakness in source material.

The difference in the exponent value in these formulae emphasizes the specific-area-resistance advantage that the bipolar transistors hold over MOSFETs as breakdown voltages increase. For example, the 450V-rated FMMT459 NPN transistor has a current capability of 150mA and a typical R CE (sat) of just 1.4ïï that allows SOT-23 packaging.

bipolar device. Both have the same basic geometry, but with some mask changes, one was processed as a MOSFET and the other as a bipolar. CIRCUIT CONFIGURATIONS Since the gate of a MOSFET device is essentially a capacitor, which consists of MOS capacitance distributed between the channel and the surface metallization, the input Q is normally extremely high.

MOSFET's are usually used in the output stage of a power amplifier. Most small signal transistors are bi-polar transistors. The bi-polar transistor is also used in the output stage of power amplifiers. If the amp is not described as a mosfet or fet amplifier you can assume that it uses bi-polar transistors in the output stages.

and JFET input op amps is typically many orders of magnitude lower than in bipolar amplifiers, the input resistance in CMOS and JFET op amps is much higher than in bipolar devices; 6×1012 (Tera-Ω) in the OPA2156, 1 TΩin the OPA828, and 1 GΩin the bipolar OPA2210 — a typical Rin is even lower in most bipolar op amps (<1 MΩ). Although bipolar devices work extremely well in high end audio power amplifiers, they include a few disadvantages that actually led to the introduction of advanced devices like MOSFETs. Perhaps the biggest disadvantage of bipolar transistors in Class B output stages is the phenomenon referred to as the runaway situation.

MOSFETs have a higher gate or miller capacitance than the base of a BJT or the grid of a VT, so turning MOSFETs all the way on then all the way off at RF, would be quite inefficient. Oct 29, 2020 #11 artis 1,108 315 @Baluncore hmm I see your making a point here.
