When I play videos with MPC-HC and open the options, on the Internal Filters page the "Audio decoder" button is greyed-out, and in the icon tray only the ffdshow audio decoder icon is shown -- the LAV audio icon is never there in the system tray, but I can still access the settings from the start menu in the K-Lite menu.

First, sound decoding shouldn't be the issue here: VLC and MPC-HC can both do the decoding, as can your onboard sound, as can your speakers (which would be bitstreaming, if you used SPDIF). The quickest thing to check is that windows knows you have a 5.1 speaker setup by going into playback devices, finding your speakers, and hitting "configure."

There actually isn't an option for me labelled as ASIO, funny enough. .I can pick either ASIO or WASAPI I think via LAV Audio Filter, but as far as the renderer in MPC-BE, my only choice is between DirectSound and MPC Audio Renderer.
